Bournemouth University has a strong reputation as one of the strongest 'new' universities in the UK. In fact, BU has been named as the country's number one 'new' university by the Guardian University Guide for the last two years (2009 & 2010). Bournemouth also has an excellent reputation for graduate employment thanks to its superb links with industry. From a quality perspective, the Quality Assurance Agency has given the University its highest level of confidence in the most recent audit (published earlier this year). Where research is concerned, BU emerged as the fourth most improved university in the UK following last year's national Research Assessment Exercise with eight of the areas assessed featuring work that is of world-leading status internationally. Above all, perhaps, as a student you'll want to know that BU is a friendly place with supportive staff and great resources to help you achieve. As for work experience prior to an MSc, it can certainly help particularly if that experience is in an area related to the programme you're about to study. Some MSc programme actually provide a period of work-related experience or encourage you to apply what you are studying to the workplace which can prove invaluable later in your career.

which is better profession, Logisitc management or business and finance in near future?
Actually I am going to start my study as postgraduate student. I would recommend you do logistic management. Very few people venture into that area which means that opportunity for employment would be high.

2
As you cannot spell Logistics, business and management might be a safer bet.

3
select first one because it will cover business and finance ( and check you intrest too) kia samjhay ;)

4
Business and finance.

5
Business and Finance gives you more options, making you more employable in a wider range of business activities. Logistic and supply chain is certainly more specific, and, if you are certain that there are such specific positions available, would give you an edge up in this field. You should do a bit more homework, and decide which option is best for you. All things being equal, I'd go for Business and Finance.

Water projects in Australia

Water projects in Australia?
I'm transferring internally with my employer to Australia, my background is civil/water engineering and Im doing environronmental management MSc in England. any tips on where the driest/biggest water and env projects in australia are? also, if you're an Aussie, which city would you think is the most enjoyable to live in? (Syd, brisbane, Melbourne, QL)

there are some massive projects underway in the south east queensland and gold coast areas for coping with the current water shortage but i think they might be nearly finished, most of the big projects are on the east coast anyway. as to which city it depends on what you want. Melbourne has the best shopping and will have the closest climate to what your used to, but doesn't have much in the line of non shopping type activities. Sydney is very central to everything and i hear it has the best night life, but i hear you have to be a native to the city to figure out its maze of roads and the traffic is horrid and it gets a lot of bush fires. as to brisbane its a sleepy little town type of city thats centrally located to the Gold coast for nightclubs and surfing, the sunshine coast for relaxing beaches and the Ipswich area for some really great hidey hole restaurants and a bit of outback style culture. it does get very hot in brisbane though and for a Brit it is extreme heat until you get used to it

I think the biggest water project in Australia would be the Murray River project. The Murray which is part of Australia's largest river system (the Murray-Darling) is in dire straits due to a combination of drought and over allocation of water to irrigation projects. There are major salination and other environmental problems and at most times, no water actually gets to the sea in SA. The Commonwealth government, in conjunction with Victoria, South Australia and NSW is committing 10 billion+ to saving the Murray though it's bound to take much more over time. I'm not sure where the politics are at at present as there has been a lot of bickering about it, but it will definitely happen - it must! The Snowy River (feeds into the Murray) is also in major trouble and I think there's a project happening there as well. Queensland is setting up a very expensive water grid to transfer water from one place to another and a couple of very unpopular new dams are on the drawing board and there are other projects happening all over the country - should be plenty of work around for someone like you! I live in Brisbane and love it here, but really, my favourite city is Melbourne. Brisbane's weather is better and we have a great outdoors lifestyle, but Melbourne is a more enjoyable city with a far greater range of cultural and other activities. Fantastic restaurants, nightlife, live theatre, shopping, the CBD has an amazing atmosphere, it's the sporting capital of Oz and the list goes on. Pity about the weather. It's very changeable (it's accurately said to have four seasons in a day), the winters can be miserable and some summer days can be unbearable but the other attractions make up for it for many people.

3
there is a water project going on at the moment i think. they are building pipes from tasmania to transfer water to melbourne. and melbourne would probably be the best. though i live in burnie(tasmanias smallest actual city) and i love it

Career change from architecture to finance/investment management

Career change from architecture to finance/investment management?
I'm 34 w/ a MSc in architecture. Been an architect for the past 7 years, but now looking for a serious career change. I'm considering doing the CFA program to find a job in investment management, but wondering if I make any chance at all getting a good job at my age given my lack of finance/economic education and work experience so far. Any tips?

Well... If you are just starting the CFA you can start as a financial adviser ( for experience) and 2 years later, when you finish the CFA, get a better job. But i can't see finance as an easy career to now start getting into.

I think it's great that you know that you want a change AND have some inspiration and direction on what you would like to do. As I'm sure you're aware, this sort of career transition will take some strategic planning and some resources. And, no, I don't think you're too old to make such a transition as long as you go into it with your eyes wide open and well-informed. You have at least 20 - 30 more years in your career! :) As a Career Coach, I always encourage my clients who are considering a career transition to do some informational interviews with folks who are in the job or field they want to go into. Many times you can connect with folks via LinkedIn, Facebook, Plaxo, etc. Even if you don't know the person, many people are willing to spend 20 - 30 minutes on the phone or at coffee to talk about themselves and their career. If you get turned down a few times after requesting informational interviews, don't be discouraged. There ARE people out there who want to help others. It's a bonus if you can find people in the accounting field who went into the field later in their career (like you would be doing). Use your friends and family network and ask them for help in finding such a person (or people) that you may be able to chat with. Reaching out on forums like this is a great start! You may find some CFAs who are answering questions that you could contact for an informational interview. If I can answer any other questions about your career transition, please contact me! -Kelly Harrington Career Coach www.kellyharrington.com

what is the difference between doing a MBA marketing and a MSc marketing

what is the difference between doing a MBA marketing and a MSc marketing?
i am currently doing a BSc marketing management i after that i would like to pursue further studies in the marketing field..but i don't know between MBA marketing and MSc marketing which one i should do and which one is better and their differences???

The difference is simple. There is no such thing as MBA in Marketing. Universities don't grant MBA in information systems, or MBA in finance, or MBA in marketing. They grant the degree Master in Business Administration, or they offer the MS in finance, MS in marketing, etc. The MBA is a general degree preparing students for management positions in any level of a business, up to CEO. MBA students study accounting, finance, marketing, management, statistics, economics, strategy, policy, and other courses. Many MBA programs offer concentrations in these and many other fields, but that amounts to only 2-3 courses in your chosen field in the second year of study. Many students avoid a concentration and take a variety of elective subjects to gain a broader background. Many MBa programs offer a marketing concentration, but you don't become a specialist in a field with 2-3 courses. It generally takes a year of concentrated study. The MBA is not like an MS degree that concentrates study in a single field and prepares students for high level staff or research positions. The MS typically requires an undergraduate education in the field in which you want the MS, or a closely related field. A finance major does not get an MS in chemistry, and a biology major does not get an MS in accounting. If you want to specialize in marketing you should get an MS degree in that specialization. Consult the Official MBA Guide. It's a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. Schools report their accreditation status, tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees, and much more. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria.

Hi all, I would like to do a Post Graduate qualification in Management (or similar). Ideally I would like something modular, maybe a PG Diploma after one year and an MSc/MBA after two years. Do you have any recommendations of a reputable college or university. I already hold a BSc and and M.Phil (research), both in the IT field. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What research topics can you think of combining insurance, business management and IT

What research topics can you think of combining insurance, business management and IT?
I'm about to start my MSc thesis soon. I am looking to enter the insurance arena (yup, I've got the actuarial career in mind!), but am stuck doing a Business Management and IT degree. Hv decided to make the switch soon, and plan to use my present thesis as a springboard. However, my University will only allow me to choose a topic that involves both or either of my primary subjects, namely, Business Management and IT. Can you think of any topics that could help me make this leap? Perhaps, something to do with management issues in insurance, or how IT can help solve a practical insurance issue? Any suggestions...? Many thanks, Charles DJ.

In order to rate your auto insurance policy, we collect the kinds of data from you that have direct input into the rating: your gender, marital status, age, territory, use of vehicle, make and model of vehicle, driving record, other drivers in the household, and perhaps a few others I fogot. We also collect other kinds of data from you that do not have direct input into your auto rating: other insurance, premium collection promptness, occupation, credit history, income, etc. How can we use this other data in rating, or if not in rating, in underwriting? According to the rating laws of your state (research them - but specifically that rates shall not be excessive, inadequate or UNFAIRLY DISCRIMINATORY (capitalization added by me for emphasis) ), would it be illegal to use any of these other kinds of data? Or to the contrary, are rates that do not use them already illegal because they are already unfairly discriminatory? What is the role of IT in keeping the organization legal with regard to data collection? ********** This is all well and good - but take some actuarial exams.

PLZ could you help give me an advice on choosing between the NETWORKING and PROGRAMMING?
if iam already finished my MSc in network management on which i selected the network designing (CCNA ROUTE) . However , i found it recently that the network design work might almost finish when your network is designed ...and started to think that programming might be better . Not actually sure which field is better in the future and that oppertunities to hunt a job so quick as well as salary issue . PLZ ......ggive me an advice

1
Networking is probably more financially lucrative than programming. CCNA is a very basic start. You need to know a lot more than just that. CCIE is the ultimate Cicso certification.

2
Networking is safer, but you need to make sure you don't just focus on Cisco (like Microsoft certs), or you'll end up like programmers who quickly become obsolete when businesses pick on new set of languages to use. I was a programmer and became a consultant as soon as I could, so I could request to go to different clients, and make sure I was using the latest operating system and programming languages and database. Even with networking, you may have to move if you end up somewhere that becomes saturated with networking and engineers. The IT field has huge ups and downs, as evidenced by the down period now. But with so few people getting into the field now (scared off) and with the boomers retiring, they'll be huge demand in the next 5 years. But the cycle will continue, since once the demand increases, tons will get into training for the IT field, and will overwhelm it again. I"ve been laid off just once, but I kept my skills up.

im running windows XP and my 80gig maxtor hard disk cant be detected but detected on device manager and in the disk management.msc. when i try to open my computer, drive C: and D: are there but the 80 GIG hard disk is not there. i also tried exchanging the IDE cable and the power suppplies, but still nothing happens. it is also detected in my BIOS... what should i do?

Check the disk jumper and set it properly. Instruction should be on the disk label

2
you need to partition it first... under NTFS system...there is a partition manager somewhere in windows..don't remember how to access it but search in windows help for it..:) Kunkhmer..what jumpers are you talking about? it's already in device manager... p.s. do what I said and it will work...

3
Try changing it's drive letter.

4
Perhaps u should consult the distributor

5
Goto Start >> Control Panel >> Computer Management Under those options click on the hard drives and then you can see the drive not being partitioned...If not then switch off your PC and then change the jumper settings to slave because it could be a conflict with the master and that is the reason for it not being detected under windows...Once you changed it to slave then you can go ahead to computer management and then partition the drives......

6
First, Did this 80Gig drive work previously? If yes then there is likely something physically wrong with it. Bad sectors causing it to not be detected correctly or a virus which damaged the drive. If this is a new drive try in Disk Manager to right click and format the drive. If this still doesn't work I'd see about taking the drive back or having a computer tech check the drive to see if it is damaged beyond repair. It shouldn't take more then 5 minutes to tell you if the drive if to far gone. Good Luck, and I hope this helps.

7
If it is a brand new hard drive, you need to go into "Disk Management" and create a partition on it. Then format that partition. You can create several partitions on it if you want to. And then format each one... one at a time.

8
Check out the following items ... ******** check whether the connection is proper ( data cabel ) ******** is the file system for all the drive is same ( is it fat or ntfs) ******** suppose if you are using the fat in some xp , it would not be detected by the computer .. ******** use the partition magic and check for the missing drives ******** restart it and check for the drives ******** if you still find problem in it ., better cal the customer care aand get help from them ..

9
Okay, this has happened a few times with mine. Goto the conrtol panel > Administrative Tools > Then in Console1 then goto storage > Disk Management Here it will show you your drives, if any are shaded out then you will have to right click on them and click mark the partition as active. Hope this helps...

For one thing, it isn't a university. At least not by Dutch standards. In Dutch it's called a 'hogeschool' which looks a bit like highschool (which in fact, is its literal translation) but in the Netherlands refers to a form of higher vocational education, or applied sciences as they call it. It doesn't lead to a formal academic degree with which you can enter a PhD-programme for instance. If that's not what you're looking for in an education, then Saxion's educational standards and syllabi seem sound enough, but I think it's a bit misleading to call it a university, especially in a European context since it doesn't offer the same academic standards and possibilities as a regular (Dutch) university. Btw, on their Dutch website Saxion calls itself a Hogeschool.

How can i motivate myself when everyone is demoralizing you

How can i motivate myself when everyone is demoralizing you ?
I am quite shy and introvert by nature (since childhood) and every one keeps on telling me that it is a weakness. Not even my parents are supportive and keep on nagging me and comparing me with my elder brother who is an extrovert and likeable by all. I don't feel like talking to anyone anymore, nor laughing. I feel very lonely all the time. It seems that i am turning into a misanthrope as i feel that i hate everyone. Due to this my academics is also suffering and for the past few years i have not performed well. But by God's grace i have been given another chance. I have been granted admission for MSc in International Management in France from a reputed institute. People keep on saying to me that "how will u be able to perform in this field since u don't speak a word"." U won't be able to survive there".There is no one who can motivate me but only pass negative comments. But i don't want to give up and prove others wrong for being so negative about me.What should I do ?

Dare to dream and make your dreams come true. Figure out what is important to YOU, not them, and then go for it. It is YOUR life to live, not anyone elses, so go live it and ignore them. SHOW them you can do it. good luck!

2
actually everyone have their own potential..try to find the best and god then will help you...nothing is impossible man,but it'll never be possible once you take it negatively...try to find somepne to talk to..

3
You can motivate yourself by ignoring everyone else's demotivating comments. If people have nothing better to say then keep pushing you down, who needs them. Isn't the phrase, if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all? Be yourself, that's the best. You've been granted admission for a reputed institute, more power and credit to you! Good luck with that as well! don't let people push you down, find people that will support you, even if your shy and introverted, find some nice friends, by even just smiling to someone if they look at you. Just that, a simple smile and they'll smile back, that's one great way to make yourself feel better. Good luck hun, just hold out and use your will to not give up and prove others wrong as motivation to keep going.

4
hullo it seems that you are fully in-sighted about your problem, i would rather call it social phobia, it is a condition that grew from childhood and reinforced by outer environment (family, friends). you have a great chance in overcome it, go to France and earn your degree and prove that you are up to it. Dr solo

5
I think you have social phobia too, as another answerer stated on here. I had that problem too, and still do, a bit, but I really worked like hell to deal with that, because I was miserable being so shy. I was so shy that teachers thought I was mentally retarded for a long time, and I am one of the exceptionally gifted, actually. So here is what i did: took theatre in junior high/middle school, debated and did extemporaneous speaking (off the cuff speaking regarding current events) in high school, lectored at my church, then coached debate, ran a large club, and then was a TA when I was in graduate school. I was absolutely terrified the whole time, got physically sick the whole time, it was so horrible!! But NOW that I am 42, no one can tell how shy I am. I am a very very effective speaker in interpersonal communications, and could get up and public speak if I had to, and be good at it. so what may help you, is start small. Take an interpersonal communications class at university, maybe take a few. If you have to fake it, so what?? It will help you in your life. But I do think you have social phobia, and you sound like you have depression, too. Anyone who isn't getting social support is going to tend to get depressed, because humans are highly social animals. If you have hobby interests that you are into, that is a great way to visit with people, because you can talk about photography, or aquariums (that's what my club was about) or birdwatching, or computers, ham radio, whatever. There is much less pressure on you, because you automatically have something to talk about. And most of those people will be introverts too, trust me. You will have to be tough for the first 3 or 4 meetings, then you will know some people. Good luck, you will have to find a way to deal with this because you will be so sad all your life if you don't. I really feel for you. Your parents love you and are taking the wrong approach with you. They know that you will be sad and they want you to have a happy life. Parents screw up too, and you are a sensitive sort, so it's easy for them to goof. Finally, there are meds for social anxiety, if it gets to that. I personally would say go for this career if that is what you want, but for you it will be harder than others. Getting into a new environment may make things a lot better, or could be worse, no way to know. All the best to you, I hope some of this advice/info will help you.

For Americans : LSE

For Americans : LSE?
How well is the London School of Economics recognized in the USA, and also in terms of job prospects? I'll be graduating from the MSc Management and Strategy in 2009 ....

LSE is one of the best schools in the world, but a lot of Americans don't know about it because.......it's not in America. My parents went to Oxford, and I'm surprised at the number of people who've never heard of it, either! The average person on the street might have never heard of LSE, but the people working in your field certainly should. If a potential employer doesn't recognize it, then a simple Google search will fill him in. It's very respectable, and hopefully the degree will take you far. It might encourage you to know that my step dad went there & then to Wharton and has done very, very well in life. : )

Hi, I think employer or recruiter will choose based on wht employee they need. If they need someone to put in the business of course they will choose MBA. but if they need someone to more technical in management of course they will choose Msc. but mainly as I know many company prefer MBA. But it's will be depend on wht your enjoy and wht you expert in. also will be depend on wht vacancy available. Cheers ~ MS

MBA: Masters in Business Administration MA: Master of Arts MSc: Master of Sciences

2
MA and MS are academic degrees. You can stop after these degrees or go on for a PhD. MS is in the sciences while MA is in the arts. A master's in finance would be an MS, not an MA. The MBA is a terminal degree that is meant to be more practical and less theoretical than an MA or MS. The best MBA programs are in the US (actually about 18 out of the top 20 programs are in the US). BusinessWeek and US News & World Reports both rank B-Schools. You can view those rankings on their web pages. In my opinion, the best MBA programs are: Wharton, University of Chicago, MIT, Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, Tuck, Harvard and Columbia

Imperial Uni or City CASS London?
To study MSc Management? Which has a better reputation? Are you in/know anyone in either? Thanks so much!

Both are great choices. Cass is probably the better choice in your area. The FT has rated the course very highly. Cass is also a big provider geared to the financial industry. Reputation, the average Joe is more likely to have heard about/know about Imperial (not necessarily for the MSc Mgt course) - in the right circles, the CASS Business School is well-known. Simple answer is to visit both places if you can and see the location/facilities and then decide yourself. My past experience says to choose the place with the most engaging and approachable professors/staff.

I'd say project management, Always been told in university to do a degree in that after my bachelors, has the highest earning potential and you're not always stuck in an office 9 - 5 looking at 4 walls. A quick Google search showed salary between 40-80 thousand dollars.

I suggest you should go for project management..

We actually interviewed some of the experts on this very topic in one of our podcasts. Here's a quick preview: Fiona Sandford is Director of Career Services at the London School of Economics and Political Science says the MBA track or the Master’s in Science track can lead to the same career but using different approaches. â€Å“The traditional MBA course exposes you to a wide range of management disciplines, and gives you a way of thinking about management and a career in that area. An MSc in Finance or an MSc in Economics gives you a very rigorous academic approach to finance disciplines or to economics. But it doesn’t, by any stretch of the imagination, preclude you from going on to developing a career in Management as many students do. So I think it depends on individual learning styles.” To listen to the rest of her advice, check out our free podcast at http://www.mbapodcaster.com/MBA_MoreInfo/MBAvMSF.asp?iEpisode=12. Which University is better for MSc/ MA in Business Management - Regent's London, Dundee or Oxford Brookes

Which University is better for MSc/ MA in Business Management - Regent's London, Dundee or Oxford Brookes?
I have got offers from several universities...but these are the short listed ones.. - Regent's London - Dundee University in Scotland - Oxford Brookes University, Oxford All of them offer partial scholarship for me. However, cost is NOT a concern nor is the cost-of-living/ accommodation in all of the above mentioned cities. Which is the best in your opinion? I have already checked the Times Good, RAE, QAA, Guardian rankings & Reports...and short-listed to these universities. I am aware that Regent's is not ranked as it is considered a "private university" in the UK. Hope you can help me choose the best ones :) Thanks!

The science part makes it different. If you go to a university and get a degree it is either in the arts or in the sciences. It depends on the curriculum that is taken. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing.

2
when you have a master that can mean either Master of Arts or Master of Science. Master of arts degrees usually include more philosophy or theory while master of science includes more mathematics and statistical courses. this goes for all areas of study. so to answer your question the Masters is just less specific. Masters of science is more specific. some schools do not use the distinction because their programs do not meet special requirements for the more specific distinctions. Alternately some persons leave the Science out of their resume etc to save space or make it less cumbersome.

what is the job market like for people with security management qualifications in Trinidad and Tobago

what is the job market like for people with security management qualifications in Trinidad and Tobago.?
I am a Trini living in the UK and I work in the rail transport sector. One of my responsibilties is security and I am planning a career change to security full time starting with an MSc security management in October 2010. (already have a BSc. Social Science) I worked in the security industry in Trinidad for about 11 years before emigrating. Anybody know what the job prospects are. I am 48 though and wonder what job seeking in Trinidad and Tobago past 50 would be like.

Your best bet may be to set up your own security company. Security is on the mind of most Trinis these days and business places as well as homeowners are very concerned. Lots of residential areas have security companies patrol the area for a fee. Where I live they charge TT$125 a month per household, but the service is only at night time and its just one car. At least its better than nothing. There are a lot of security companies however but their service is at times less than up to mark. I myself have an alarm at home which triggers a call to a security company. About a month ago one of my relatives set off the alarm by accident and the company never responded. They said the girl monitoring the system was new. Lucky for me it was not a real emergency.

2
I think the prospect is good. Some of these security personnel making more money than police and army personnel.

3
don't worry man your competiton will be only ex-police/solider. Who knows you might get a nice post on the Rapid Rail project... or the Rapid Fail project

As an MSc is more research-based than an BSc you'll be in charge of managing your own time. If the course is over a single year you will be quite busy, but fortunately you'll always have time for a social life, and Brighton is a great city for that.

The MBA is a general business degree training students for top level management positions up to CEO or for those with entrepreneurial objectives of starting their own business. The Master of Science is a specialized degree in a particular field such as finance, chemistry, accounting, engineering, etc. training students for top level staff and research positions who prefer not to get into general management. The MS typically requires an undergraduate education in the field in which you want the MS, or a closely related field. A finance major does not get an MS in chemistry, and a biology major does not get an MS in accounting. If you want to specialize in a particular field other than business administration, such as finance, marketing, operations management, human resource management, or a non-business field such as public health, or public administration, you should get an MS degree in that specialization. The Official MBA Guide provides a lot of information about the MBA degree and MBA schools and programs. It's the best service available at http://officialmbaguide.org.

Well, without knowing what your career is, then I can't tell you. You can get a Masters of Business Admistration, but if you are just doing basic tech work, then maybe that's not your thing. You can for M. IT or a Masters in Marketing. It all depends on what you are doing and where you want to go. I think you should contact a counseler and the school you want to attend, they should be able to help you the best.
